69 x 66 x 29 cm (97 cm when open)
English (Cotswolds), first quarter twentieth century
Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945); Bertha (Betty) Rothenstein, and by family descent
Despite similarities to work by Ernest Gimson, Sydney Barnsley and Peter Waals, without documentation (and no drawing survives) an attribution cannot be made. There is no reason to assume that Rothenstein stopped commissioning furniture at a particular date, so the table could have been made by any number of craftsmen working in the Cotswolds.
We are grateful to Barley Roscoe and Annette Carruthers for their thoughts.
