Pair of Candle Stands

Painted and gilded beech (?) and pine, with metal feet

37 in (94 cm)
English, circa 1810

PROVENANCE:
[ ... ]; H. Blairman & Sons, 1960s; the late Greta & Norbert Magnus.

The Magnus collection was particularly strong in furniture and works of art the Regency period, and in Chinoiserie in particular. A cabinet. probably made for the Royal Pavilion at Brighton was bequeathed to Temple Newsam House, Leeds and a sofa table, attributed to George Bullock went to the City Museums and Art Gallery, Birmingham.

Although the maker of the present stands has not been identified, the stems and bases should be compared to those on contemporary pole screens, undoubtedly from the same workshop, in a series of notable houses. At Houghton there is a pair of related pole screens with black and gold decoration; at Stourhead, a pair of mahogany pole screens (potentially by Chippendale the Younger), and at Castle Coole, a pair of rosewood and ebonised bases (converted into lamps).
