Masterpiece, London: a return to Regency


At the end of a week that has seen the United Kingdom head off into uncharted territory, we have all had to continue going about our daily activities.  For us, this has meant setting up our stand at Masterpiece: the elite end-of-season London fair.

masterpiece2016 logoThis year our stand sees us highlighting an area pioneered during the 1920s and 1930s by collectors such as Edward Knoblock, Gerald Wellesley and Albert Richardson, as well as my grandfather and Temple Williams: the English Regency period (see above).

We include five examples of furniture designed by George Bullock, including an oak gothic writing table similar to one from Battle Abbey, now in the V&A, and a mahogany and marble-topped side table.  From the firm of Vulliamy is an apparently unique pair of Piranesi-inspired candelabra (as well as a small marble clock case, surmounted by an eagle).  A George Smith armchair (from a design published in 1808) is the ninth example of this model to be recorded, and probably comes from a set thought to have been supplied to Philip John Miles for Leigh Court; others from the set are in the V&A and at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton.  Also at the Royal Pavilion is an identical bust to the one we are exhibiting by Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, depicting George IV.

masterpiece2016 serpent smlAt a more modest level, we are showing a sherry glass from a service supplied for the Prince Regent (before he became George IV), a carved sphinx head by James Watt, dated 1813, and a pair of gilt bronze ornaments originally for a fireplace, by the London maker Burton & Co to a design patented in 1810 (illustrated).  The same ornaments can be seen on a grate at Badminton House.

Masterpiece opens to the public on Thursday 30 June (with a private preview the day before), and runs until 6 June.  You will find us on stand D 20.
