Sideboard

After a design by Bruce James Talbert
(1838-81)

Oak with brass handles
74 in (188 cm) x 82 1/2 in (209.5 cm) x 22 1/2 in (57.1 cm)
English, circa 1880

The form and details of the present sideboard correspond with designs in Talbert's Fashionable Furniture (London, 1881), particularly pl. 20. The overall appearance of this piece, and other designs in Fashionable Furniture, are typical of the work Talbert was producing at this period for commercial cabinet makers.

Among furniture associated with designs in Fashionable Furniture is an oak 'Drawing Room' cabinet based on plate 65 (see Martin Levy, 'A Collection of Victorian decorative arts', The Magazine Antiques, June 2000, figs I-III) and a walnut and marquetry cabinet based on plate 50 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Many other of the cabinets, chairs and tables in this volume can be identified in surviving furniture and 'estimate sketches' by Gillow.
