Aesthetic Movement


This section incorporates designers and manufacturers who were united by their attempts to lift the design of decorative arts to a higher, more artistic level. At the beginning there was the Art Movement, dominated by figures such as William Morris and Philip Webb, followed by designers including E.W. Godwin and Christopher Dresser.


On the commercial manufacturing side, Collinson & Lock was closely allied with the sentiments of artistic design as, on occasions, were much larger firms such as Gillow, Lamb of Manchester and Elkington. 


It is primarily through the output of such firms that the Aesthetic Movement achieved widespread popular recognition.


Although more properly recognised as exponents of High Victorian design, within the category of Art Furniture, for convenience, may be placed the work designed by Owen Jones and some of the output of his favoured manufacturer Jackson & Graham.
